This page is dedicated to the horses and the people who have opened their homes to them. It's a place for you to share the story of the horse(s) you have rescued from us if you are so inclined. Auction horses do not deserve the prejudice that many people feel towards them. Sharing your experience with your rescue horse may help to change minds. Thankyou to all that have opened their homes to a horse that so desperately needed it.
If you wish to share your story here please send it to my email and I will add it
- Jesse (Jax)
- One fine day last fall my husband decided he would like to be able to ride something besides my Welsh Cob who although she can easily carry him is only 14.1 hh tall. As I never need much of a reason to go looking at horses I started my search. I looked at about 60 different horses from various people selling privately, trainers and breeders and lastly met up with Cathy to look at the rescues from the auction mart. I wanted to take a few of them home immediately they were gorgeous and well mannered and I couldn't find much wrong with any of them. Cathy let me come back numerous times to see them and spend as much time as I would like with them.
I was very drawn to Jesse as he had a wonderful personality and seemed to like everyone who came out to the pasture. Sadly he was quite underweight but his personality was spectacular. I asked if I could foster him. I couldn't leave him and wasn't a hundred percent sure that he was underweight due to human error. We dragged him home last October and have not once regretted our decision. He has the most amazing personality. He certainly did not deserve to be sent for meat. He has thrived on the grass hay that we feed our ponies. He is very willing never balks and is just absolutely wonderful. It will take some time to build his muscles back up but we have all the time in the world especially when he is so delightful to work with.I was going to pay a trainer to come out and get on Jesse just in case he was unmanageable under saddle but one day my daughter said she was just going to get on him and see, and he was a complete gentleman, never even swished his tail. He was a little confused by her just going straight up and over him a few times as I didn't think she should sit on him at first but he didn't move a muscle. She rides him very lightly a couple of times a week.Jesse's personality is so wonderful that we hope to use him as an equine assisted learning horse. I was extremely skeptical of buying a horse that came from an auction where most of the horses are meant to be sold as meat. I felt that if the horse was at auction it had to have something seriously wrong with it. That is definitely not the case. I attended the last two horse auctions and was horrified when after speaking to a few owners realized that they simply did not want their horses anymore and didn't care enough to try and find them a good home. They also didn't care if they went for meat or not. There is still a saddle-bred mare for sale on the site who was owned by a teenage girl who just no longer wanted her horse, she was ridden regularly for the four years that the girl owned her.I wish I could take home a few more of the horses that Cathy is trying to find homes for, and I am sure anyone can find one there to suit their specific personality and riding style.I also saw a few of the local trainers at the auction looking for some new prospects. Buying a horse through Cathy gives you the opportuinty to spend considerable time with the horse before you buy. - Jody
Caliente (Kelly)
In the fall of 2011, my daughter and I made the decision to open our pasture to a few more horses and foster some of those needing homes. After much searching, I found Cathy and all her wonderful horses.
A trip was made out, and a few hours were spent visiting and feeding treats to all. We wanted to take them all home, but we stuck to our limit of three, as hard as it was!
A beautiful blood bay and white ex-brood mare with blue eyes (Catori), and a sweet puppy-like sorrel two year old (Cabo) were our first two picks.
The third horse was one I fell in love with on the spot, and it broke my heart to see him. His name was Caliente. He was an older sorrel gelding, and you could see in his heart that he wanted to come to us. Physical scars on his face were indicative of an abusive past, but the mental scars were the ones that made him so wary of us humans and unable to trust.
I chose him right then and there for my personal horse.
After 8 months Caliente (now Kelly) still has his bad days. I still cannot touch his back feet, and once in a while he is very hard to catch and flinches as though he expects to be hit.
Once he is haltered though, he becomes a different horse, full of mischief and happy to be out riding, ears pricked and whinnying to his friends.
He is well broke, and is a perfect gentleman under saddle and is now helping me teach people how to ride.
Our vet believes he is between 20 and 25, and was shocked as he has the energy of a colt. He shows no signs of his age, no stiffness or arthritis, and I am sure we will have many years of riding together left to do.
How or why he came to auction, and what happened in his past will always be a mystery to me, but I am that much richer for having taken a chance on a horse that was considered "garbage" and thrown away.
What Cathy does comes from her heart... She puts her soul into saving these horses. Can we do any less?
Please, if you are considering purchasing a horse, speak with her and come down and meet these wonderful animals for yourself.
They are worth saving.
Jodi and Kimberly
PS... We have officially adopted both Kelly and Cabo!
ODESSA & SCOTTY (LUCAS)
I wanted a horse all my life but being a city dweller, I didn't think
that dream would ever come true. Finally, now that I'm nearing
retirement and my kids are grown up I decided that I could take on the
responsibilities of being a "horse-mom". I looked on Kijiji for over
a year and after a while all the ads started to look the same - except
for one. I decided that since I am at a stage of life when time is
less important I could consider a rescue horse whose past was unknown
so I went to see the rescues in Cathy's ad. I fell hard for one named
Odessa. She had a limp but I had a vet check her and hoped that with
proper care I could help her. Unfortunately, her illness was worse
than the vet had led me to believe and I decided to euthanize Odessa.
Although I was heartbroken, I truly felt privileged to have been part
of her life even for just a short time. I got to re-experience that
feeling of connecting with something beautiful beyond words.
I waited for a couple of months and was encouraged by my family to try
again. I went to see Cathy's horses again. This time I tried to be a
little less emotional and settled on a white and sorrel paint named
Lucas, who was later renamed Scotty. I asked a friend with a lot of
horse experience to help me decide. He seemed very gentle and
receptive to human contact, but also seemed very depressed. It also
appeared from some of the marks on his body that he may have been
abused before going to auction. We felt that he would be a good
choice for me, as long as I was willing to wait for him to come around.
We brought Scotty to his new home in August and every chance I get to
go and see him is a joy for me. Although I know he is broke to ride I
have yet to get on him as I want to take lots of time establishing the
trust that he lost in people. I suppose I may not need to take as
long as I have, I am getting older and actual riding is secondary to
me. Now that he is healing and has put on weight, and we have spent
some time working together, his true personality is coming out and he
has a great sense of humor. I know I made the right choice in taking
a rescue and am thankful for the opportunity to help save a life.

GUS & MARLEY
I grew up having horses, then was into boys, got married, had 3 boys of my own. For many years I lived in places where I couldn't have a horse. When I lived in Sakatoon, SK I use to go to Auctions with a friend, and after seeing what happened there I had to stop going! I felt like I couldn't do much at that time to help and I always thought if I could just save one!!!!!! Well after many years and finally owning a place to bring a horse home to, I have fulfilled a dream that deep down I wasn't sure would ever happen! Beginning of Jan 2013 I googled rescue horses and came upon savinghorses.weebly.com. I was a little addicted with going on, and was trying to think about how, I could save just one horse. It was just after Christmas, and I owned 2 horses already, and didn't think I could afford 1 more. And then an idea popped in my head. I thought I will put a post on my facebook and let people know what I want to do and see who wants to help me! In no time at all a friend of mine texted me and asked if I really wanted to save a horse. She then told her husband, who acted like, oh well horses die everyday. Little did she know her husband contacted me and said what's up with the horses? We started texting that night and I explained what I wanted to do. He then said why not save 2!? My reply was I don't know if I can afford 1 let alone 2! He so generously offered to buy 2 and transport them here to my acreage. I live 3 hours from where the horses are. This whole time his wife had no idea about his plan to help me and the horses. And little did she know she was going to be a proud owner of a little Appy named Marley! I didn't know really which one I was going to bring home. I spoke to Cathy and Kim lots and had made a plan to go there first to meet the horses, but due to a huge storm here, I couldn't make the trip as planned! The horse I originally was interested in was Armando and I thought he was just wanted I wanted, based on looks at first. Its sad as I think we all look at the visual aspects of a animal first. I then told myself I am going to the rescue with a open mind and I was hoping the horse would pick me. On Jan 13, 2013 my friends husband and I made the trip. My stomach was ready to jump out of me, I was so nervous and excited of course! You have to remember my friend who I text everyday, and work with "I tell her everything" had no idea! I felt pretty guilty and had a hard time not sharing this exciting news with her! When we arrived Kim and her daughter were there and had a few of the horses in the barn that we thought might be a good fit. I knew Marley was coming home as she best suited my friend that doesn't have a bunch of experience riding, and from what I was told was very quite, had been broke and just needed hours on her. Marley is very pretty and sweet! I saw Armando, he is a beautiful horse and just want I would have liked, but I just wasn't feeling it. In my mind he was gorgeous, and had many good qualities and I knew he would get a home. I then met Gus, I think what captured me first, were his eyes! He looked broken , sad and just defeated! He also reminded me of Manny the Mammoth off Ice Age and" not because of size"! I then moved on and looked at the other horses, and just listened to what was being said about the horses. I kept going back to Gus. After rubbing his head and walking him around I just knew"he chose me" ! My friends husband had so kindly purchased 2 turn out blankets for the ride home, "it was a frigid" day and the horses thanked him I'm sure! The moment that blanket went on Gus, it was like I have a owner and I'm important! Marley walked on the trailer, and so it seemed like, she said ok let's get going! Gus took it slower, but just the same did it like a pro! We made it home late that night, it was a 12 hour day. I had hay waiting for them and they walked off the trailer and went straight for the hay! Since arriving home, they have had the Farrier do their feet and there were no issue's He said they had good feet and they were so well behaved! My heart is full of love for these 2 and they will live out their days here, with loads of tlc and wonderful care! I highly encourage anyone thinking about rescuing a horse , to do it , don't just think about it! I was lucky I had the support of my friends husband and some other family and friends who donated money for Gus and Marley! I also want to mention that the day we went my sister and her friend met us on the way. My sisters friend has since rescued 2 horses as well. I also told a man I know, and he is interested in Armando, he has to wait his turn however has there is a girl interested in him too! What matters is that he gets a forever home! I would like to thank all involved ! Cathy and Kim "Thank you"! I will continue to help the cause and spread the word! I also have spoken to the local Farm Supply store here in Brandon and we are going to set up an acct where people can make donations ! I have a few ideas to get the word out! Just have to wait and see! Sorry for the long testimonial, but it could have been longer!I also want to add, me rescuing has inspired a friend of mine to drop dog food off at the shelter in Saskatoon and to help with a drive they did to raise money! I just think if we all do our part, we can make a huge difference in the lives of many animals! You guys inspired me as well Cathy!

In 2011 my husband and I were living and working up north near Flin Flon and even though we enjoyed our work we were not happy with our life.
Something was missing. So one day we sat down and asked our self what we saw in our future...
We played around with a couple ideas...one was to buy some land at a lake and live there till the end of our days or move back down south and buy a farm or ranch and get lots of animals with the main focus on cattle.
We both chose the farm/ranch and with that Scott my husband found a cattle ranch for sale near Riverton. Once we decided we were going to buy it and were in the dealings with the realtor we started to look at livestock.
When I looked through kijiji I came across an add posted by Cathy about horses rescued from auction.
I read through the add and looked at the pictures and liked what I saw.
I showed the add to Scott and he looked through it as well and liked the horses listed there...I then tried to contact Cathy through the e-mail address but never got a reply. Something must have gone wrong because Cathy never got my message.
I then looked for her on Facebook and found her! She added me and history was in the making.
I was so in love with her photo album full of beautiful horses, one prettier then the next and if I could have I would have bought every single one of them!!
Scott loved the pictures as well but before we made any kind of decision we wanted to look at them face to nose.
The time came when we had to go south to take care of some mortgage details and with that we arranged to meet Cathy at the farm to show us the horses.
Once done at the bank we met Cathy on a cold snowy day and we went into the pasture to check out all the horses we had seen in pictures.
At first they came and kind of checked us out but not having any treats they didn't have much interest in us and took off...
We followed, through slushy snow in runners and cold but we didn't care! We came all this way to see them.
Finally they settled at one corner of the pasture and we got to look at them up close. Jazz was being a brat and didn't really come near us but that was ok. Neshoba though went and checked out Scott who had stayed close by the truck.
We were just in horsey heaven lol.
After freezing our buns off we left Cathy and told her we would let her know which horses we would pick.
It took us a bit to decide because they were all beautiful and there were so many to choose from.
Finally we picked Leo and Jazz, I texted Cathy the news and she was happy to hear it.
Then my hubby texted me from work that he really like Neshoba and she was the only one who came to him. I asked him if he wanted to get her too and he said sure...but already done...he then told me that he already had texted Cathy and told her.
A bit later we spied Misty and Samson, I believe she and her colt came from a different auction then the first three horses we picked.
Misty, which we later renamed to Momma, and her baby.
That brought us to five horses, well, four and a “I want to be a horse when I grow up|” lol.
Then out of nowhere came these pictures of a gorgeous 2 year old Thoroughbred mare. She had legs for days and the most gentle, wise eyes ever!
I knew she was going to be mine! I hinted at me wanting her to my honey and he let me get her.
I texted Cathy again and told her that I WANTED Santana!
If anyone had spoken for her already I think I would have taken them on in a fist fight lol.
When we finally got to pick the horses up, I was so happy and overwhelmed with pride and love for these animals that I cried happy tears. If it hadn't been for Cathy and all her efforts in finding homes for these horses we would have never had our herd which has grown now to 10 horses and one recently born foal. Jazz was pregnant when we bought her and nobody knew and the little colt was born healthy and both mom and baby are well...he was born on February 20th 2013...
Neshoba was pregnant but her foal was stillborn on the 2nd of January 2013.
Santana has gone to greener pastures due to an unknown illness that not even the vet could figure out. She passed over the rainbow bridge on the 1st of January 2013. RIP my girl!
But even though we had some hard hits we have had many great days with Santana and just because she died we are not giving up helping horses in need. Cathy is an inspiration to us and through her we have met many wonderful people.
We also met Kim and Jodi of Blackbird Ranch and are happy and thankful to be able to call them our friends.
