Back in March of 2011 a friend of mine was approached by the owner of the property where the rescues stayed awaiting new homes. During this meeting my friend discovered that he had 16 other horses on the property that he was planning to bring to auction in April. They were not his horses, he had picked them up from various circumstances. He had already been approached by a killbuyer and turned him down as he wanted to at least give them the slim chance of getting a home at auction. We talked to him about the possiblity of taking photos of the horses and trying to network them to get them homes instead of going to auction. He agreed and we managed to home them all. Since then we have saved and rehomed approximately 200 horses. Most were saved from the killbuyer at horse auctions. Some were saved from the Winnipeg Livestock cattle auctions and some were sold to him by their owner instead of selling for meat or going to auction.I have personally attended the horse auctions and I have seen many good horses sell for slaughter. Probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life and maybe always will be. But there were good times too. Very good times and I have met some truly wonderful people and extraordinary horses that it has been an honour to be a part of saving. I will be forever grateful for being given the opportunity. It was hard work, oftentimes heartbreaking and on occasion very frustrating but it was worth every minute.
